Our charitable mission is to improve the health of the people in our communities every day, with quality and compassion.
Baystate Health supports our local communities in many ways. Our commitment to caring for uninsured and underinsured people means we often absorb the cost of that care. In total, Baystate Health provided unreimbursed care to our patients at a cost of more than $131 million in FY2015. (get this number for 2016 from Susan).
Better Together Grant Program
Baystate Medical Center and its Community Benefits Advisory Council (CBAC) chose several community efforts in the newly established Better Together Grants Program. Better Together is made possible through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Determination of Need (DoN) requirements to address community health needs. Better Together unites health care and community-based nonprofit organizations across Baystate Health’s service areas to shape future health care and human services. The aim is to develop approaches that, by targeting the social determinants of health, will improve people’s overall well-being and make our communities healthier places to live. In 2016, the Better Together grants program awarded grants to eligible non-profit organizations with current IRS designated 501(c)(3) status that have projects directly benefiting residents of Hampden County, with a focus on the underserved and vulnerable populations in Greater Springfield. Awarded grantees included HAP Housing (Healthy Hill Initiative), Revitalize CDC (Healthy Homes Initiative), Project Coach (youth coach and leadership development initiative), Prison Birth Project (doula initiative), Men of Color Health Awareness (Ludlow Jail Pilot Project), Springfield Food Policy Council (community capacity building), MA Public Health Association (community capacity building), and River Valley Counseling (LGBTQ Training and Education Conference).
In 2016, we sponsored community events that raise funds and awareness as well as foster safer and healthier neighborhoods. In addition, our employees donated more than 3,000 new toys for “In the Spirit of Giving” Community Toy Drive and through the generous donations of our employees we were able to support 124 classrooms by supplying 172 filled bins with an assortment of much needed classroom supplies to local schools.
